Best veggie burger at grocery store8/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Morning Star Farms - Veggie Grillers Prime Morning Star Farms That method works great… but it’s not a burger. You’re better served cutting this one into chunks, cooking it stir-fry style and then tossing it over a salad or throwing it in a tortilla. The idea is great, but there is no winning with this one. If you attempt to cook it a second longer, it will dry out. Carefully flip and cook an additional five minutes until heated through and well browned.” If you follow those directions your patty will be frozen. The directions state “cook burger approximately seven minutes until browned. I’ve let it sit for hours before cooking, and it still failed to not be frozen. But because no matter how closely you follow the directions, no matter how long you let this frozen patty thaw out, it’ll always be frozen in the middle. Praeger’s makes it obvious.Īlas, we’re still ranking this one last. With some plant-based products, you can’t tell what you’re eating - Dr. To be honest, I found this weirdly comforting. Before we had meat 2.0, we had veggie burgers - the OG plant-based meat product! This blend consists of carrots, peas, zucchini, onions, spinach, broccoli, corn, bell peppers, string beans, and soybeans and it’s pretty simple to pick each of those ingredients out visually when you look at the weird yellow and beige Praeger’s patty. Praeger’s California Veggie Burgers make no attempt to be fake meat, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Praeger’s - California Veggie Burgers Dr. We taste-tested and ranked the eight popular grocery store plant-based burger brands to find which one you need to pick up on your next grocery run. These ingredients, more than even regular beef, seem to benefit from a little TLC and a lack of lunch-rush pressure. And a homemade plant-based burger really can be delicious enough to actually rival the real thing. Luckily, the same meat imposters that can be found in those mediocre plant-based burgers are also readily available at a grocer near you. But none of them are crave-worthy (unless you count the Impossible Burger at Umami as “fast food”). Right now, the big fast-food chains are taking a decent stab at the plant-based burger but - with the exception of a very small few - most plant-based burgers in the fast food landscape are far from mind-blowing. ![]() If you’re curious about where to get the best plant-based burger money can buy, we’re here to tell you that you’re more likely to find it in your own kitchen than at your favorite fast food restaurant. ![]()

Topsoil a horizon definition8/11/2023 ![]() She also points out that topsoil may get mixed into underlying soil layers, rather than disappearing completely. Michelle Wander, at the University of Illinois, says that the study relies on a series of assumptions to fill in gaps in the data, and those assumptions probably overestimate topsoil loss. Some other soil scientists, however, are skeptical of Thaler's methodology. "I think the USDA is dramatically underestimating the amount of loss," Thaler says. That estimate is far higher than those published by the U.S. This produced their estimate that a third of all cropland in that region had lost its topsoil. They calculated that about a third of the crops were growing on erosion-prone hills. Thaler's team then expanded their study to fields of corn, soybeans, and other crops within a large area of the upper Midwest that includes much of Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. The soil gradually fell down hillsides, a little bit each year, as farmers tilled the soil. Thaler believes that a century of plowing is to blame. "The A-horizon was almost always gone on hilltops," he says. The loss of topsoil is a critical problem worldwide. What's more, Thaler found that this was consistently the case on particular parts of the landscape. The upper portion of the soil that is used by plants for obtaining water and nutrients, often referred to as the horizon.Higher levels of organic matter in topsoil cause it to be darker and richer than subsoil and give it greater potential for crop production. Department of Agriculture has carried out, and found that light brown soil contained so little organic carbon, it really wasn't A-horizon soil at all. student at the University of Massachusetts. Thaler and his colleagues compared that color, as seen from satellites, with direct measurements of soil quality that the U.S. Soil scientists call this layer the 'A-horizon.' It's the 'black, organic, rich soil that's really good for growing crops,' says Evan Thaler, a Ph.D. The soil that remains is often much lighter in color. Plowing, though, released much of the trapped carbon, and topsoil was also lost to wind and water erosion. When settlers first arrived in the Midwest, it was everywhere, created from centuries of accumulated prairie grass. It's full of living microorganisms and decaying plant roots, also called organic carbon. ![]() student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Soil scientists call this layer the "A-horizon." It's the "black, organic, rich soil that's really good for growing crops," says Evan Thaler, a Ph.D. The soil that's darkest in color is widely known as topsoil. The color of bare soil varies, and that variation is related to soil quality. The new study emerged from a simple observation, one that people flying over Midwestern farms can confirm for themselves. Some of their colleagues, however, remain skeptical about the methods that produced this result. The most fertile topsoil is entirely gone from a third of all the land devoted to growing crops across the upper Midwest, the scientists say. A team of scientists just came up with a staggering new estimate for just how much has disappeared. Macaw bird sketch8/11/2023 ![]() Foraging involves searching for food or time spent enjoying food. Macaws are intelligent birds that also thrive on activities designed to challenge them, such as foraging activities. The cost of a stable supply of toys should be factored in to the monthly pet budget. A pet macaw will need a consistent supply of appropriate toys and other safe items to destroy. Macaws can be quite playful and love toys they can chew up, especially items made of wood. Although, to the uninitiated, macaws seem formidable and may bluster and carry on, those who share their lives with these magnificent friends know that they contain surprisingly loving hearts and sensitive natures. Even the mini macaws are big - on the inside! Colorful and often raucous, they call attention to themselves even when quiet. Everything about them is big, from their voices to their attitudes. Macaws tend to love Pellet-Berries, Avi-Cakes, and Nutri-Berries. The berry and cake shapes of these foods invite more interaction. Lafeber’s bird foods are ideal for the lively macaw, a bird that appreciates the opportunity to tear apart its meals. The wild macaw’s diet tends to be high in fat, which is acceptable for a bird that spends its day flying through the rainforest, finding food, nesting, and rearing chicks.Ĭompanion macaws tend to have a much easier life than their wild counterparts, but they miss out on the ability to forage for their food, a behavior that comes naturally. The dietary needs of some macaw species differ from that of other parrots because they need more fat in their diet. In their natural habitat, macaws feed on native seeds, fruits, flowers, leaves, palm nuts, figs, nectar, and, in some regions, clay from exposed river banks. Overall, a macaw needs a much larger cage and play stand than other parrot species, so a potential owner should take space considerations into account. By suvajit/Ī macaw needs a cage tall enough to prevent its tail feathers from hitting the cage bottom, which can cause the tail feathers to bend or break. Macaws are known for their long tails, which means they need a large, tall cage. Three macaws are vulnerable: hyacinth macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), military macaw ( Ara militaris), and blue-headed macaw ( Primolius couloni). Three macaws are endangered: Lear’s macaw ( Anodorhynchus leari), great green macaw ( Ara ambiguus), and red-fronted macaw ( Ara rubrogenys). Three macaws are critically endangered: glaucous macaw ( Anodorhynchus glaucus), blue-throated macaw ( Ara glaucogularis), and Spix’s macaw ( Cyanopsitta spixii). Nine species are currently at the most risk. Some species of macaw are endangered or at risk of extinction, according to the IUCN Red List. Macaws, and other parrot species, native to the Amazon basin, such as Peru, have been observed eating from clay licks (clay at exposed river bank), which researchers believe is a way for the parrots to neutralize toxins found in some of the foods they consume in the wild. They inhabit rainforests, as well as grasslands and grassy woodland-type areas. Evidence shows that the Caribbean also had native macaw species, which are now extinct, such as the Cuban macaw ( Ara tricolor) and the Saint Croix macaw ( Ara autochthones). Macaws are native to the southern portion of North America (Mexico) plus Central America and South America. For example, the blue-and-gold macaw is sometimes called the blue-and-yellow macaw, and the military macaw is sometimes called the chestnut-fronted macaw. ![]() Some of these species have other common names. The commonly kept companion macaw species include the following, listed by common name and scientific name: blue-and-gold macaw ( Ara ararauna), green-winged macaw ( Ara chloropterus), Hahn’s macaw ( Diopsittaca nobilis nobilis), hyacinth macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), scarlet macaw ( Ara macao), military macaw ( Ara militaris), and severe macaw ( Ara severus). ![]() The mini macaws are much smaller and include those from the genera Diopsittaca, Orthopsittaca, and Primolius.Īlthough there are 18 living species of macaws, not all commonly get adopted by people. This “blue macaws” group includes the hyacinth, along with the critically endangered Lear’s macaw and Spix’s macaw. The large macaws include those of the Ara, Anodorhynchus, and Cyanopsitta genera. Macaws are informally classified into two groups: large macaws and mini macaws. Some macaw species have bare facial patches. These parrots have a long, streamlined physique and colorful feathering, ranging from the hyacinth macaw’s hyacinth blue to the scarlet macaw’s scarlet red coloring. Macaw adaptations include large, curved, powerful beaks designed to crack open hard nuts and seeds. Macaws have long tail feathers as well as big beaks. The hyacinth macaw is the longest parrot, with a head to tail length of nearly 40 inches. Macaws are known as the giants of the parrot world. ![]()
